Once soil reaches 70°F, sow directly outside in hills 6' apart to allow plenty of room for vines to spread. In cool climates, start indoors 2-4 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Allow 2-3 plants per hill. Do not disturb tender roots when transplanting. Does best in well-draining soil that is kept evenly moist.

Allow watermelon to become overripe on the vine. Scoop out pulp into water. Remove floating seeds and pulp, keeping only seeds that sink. Clean seeds and dry for a few weeks. Label and store for up to 5 years.
